Overview

WhatsUp Gold is a graphical network mapping, monitoring, reporting, and notification solution that helps you keep your mission-critical network up and running 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It provides a variety of views into your network status in real-time--alerting you when monitored devices and services become unavailable or specific system events occur which may affect network stability. As a result, your organization can improve employee productivity, increase customer satisfaction, and avoid lost revenue.

WhatsUp Gold is the affordable alternative to expensive and complicated network management systems. It gives you all the features you need for comprehensive real-time network monitoring at a fraction of the cost of other systems. After including implementation, training, hardware, and software costs, the total cost of ownership for WhatsUp Gold is tens of thousands of dollars less than for other network management systems.

Within larger organizations, individual departments may use WhatsUp Gold to monitor the availability of mission-critical applications such as Lotus Notes, Oracle, SQL Server, Sybase, Microsoft Exchange, or IIS. Or, WhatsUp Gold can complement the monitoring functionality in comprehensive end-to-end network management frameworks. Networks in small and medium-sized businesses may use WhatsUp Gold as their all-in-one network management system.

Thus, WhatsUp Gold is ideal for businesses of all sizes: larger organizations can use it at the departmental level to monitor the availability of mission-critical applications or to complement the existing monitoring system; small-to-medium sized businesses can use it as their all-in-one network management system.

In WhatsUp Gold version 8.0, major enhancements have been made to each of the four key functions of the product. These enhancements make it possible for anyone managing a network to quickly and accurately analyze its performance, avoid costly downtime, and review segments of the network to obtain targeted data.

Key Features

Take a closer look at these great features and see why over 31,000 IT professionals world-wide use WhatsUp Gold to keep watch over their networks and equipment.

Mapping

Map an accurate rendition of your network in minutes. Using the auto discovery wizard, WhatsUp Gold creates an accurate representation of your network based on information contained in your computer or on your network - so you can start monitoring immediately.

SmartScan looks to your router tables and automatically discovers and maps devices according to your network's hierarchy, with separate maps for each sub-network ...or use the IP Address Scan feature which allows you to scan for a range of IP addresses and services and map them. This feature is especially useful for those who wish to monitor only a portion of a network or sub-network.

Precise Network Renditions. Utilizing vector-based graphics, drawing tools, customizable icons, and snap-to-grid functionality, WhatsUp Gold provides administrators with a high level of flexibility and control as well as better network renditions, easier navigation capabilities, and overall time savings.

  • Device Identification - SmartScan technology performs secondary device checks (S-checks) to discover custom devices and services running on the network (e.g. services on non-standard ports, specialized devices and end-user applications). Custom devices are automatically mapped with icons, monitors and services as defined in the device library. Secondary checks add depth to the automatic discovery process, saving time and ensuring accurate monitoring and identification policies for these devices.
  • Active Discovery - Scheduled sweeps of the network identify and notify you of any new device on the network and automatically map the device along with the appropriate monitoring policy. Active-Discovery helps network managers stay on top of dynamic networks and ensures mission critical services are monitored without relying on manual inspection of change-order reports.
  • Selective Discovery maps the specific device types you choose to include (ex. servers) or exclude (ex. workstations) rather than a blanket discovery of all network devices. Streamline the discovery process to map only relevant network information which requires less bandwidth to monitor.
  • Customized Device Icons - Users can create customized device icons using a drawing tool called Vector Device Editor. The end result is maps that are more legible, spacing is cleaner, and customized map editing is faster with better network topology.

Easier Navigation
WhatsUp Gold’s autodiscovery wizard allows users to choose which discovered devices appear on their maps. With vector-based graphics, users may zoom in and out to view specific devices or entire networks which makes navigation of large maps more efficient.

Dependencies Arrows
The touch of a button displays color coded arrows indicating dependencies among devices on a map. Maps can then easily be “read” to determine that a particular device is dependent on another being up or down. The visual confirmation of dependencies helps reduce unnecessary polling traffic and unnecessary alerts for devices down-stream from a device fault.

XML and Custom Map Formats make it easier to share data (device data) between WhatsUp Gold and other applications and make global map edits. You can now  save and restore maps in various file formats (XML, INI, and further extensibility).

Monitoring

Monitor the status of your network’s devices, services and resources.

Identify & Resolve Problems Fast. You can rely on WhatsUp Gold to proactively monitor network availability and provide real-time notification of any specific failure. Go beyond just checking for device status, by monitoring the services, ports, resources, and events which are related to the device.

Service Monitoring

  • TCP/IP Services – WhatsUp Gold will check availability of individual network ports. Choose to monitor the ports which are used by critical services or applications. Extended capabilities are included to talk to the application or service from the port via custom scripting within WhatsUp Gold
  • NT/2000/XP Services – Keep critical services up and running using WhatsUp Gold’s ability to check the status of NT/2000/XP services running on remote devices. Better yet, set WhatsUp Gold to restart any failed service automatically without any manual effort necessary.

Event Log Monitoring provides greater security and faster problem resolution
WhatsUp Gold's Event Log Monitoring can alert you to low level events such as security breeches and system and application errors. WhatsUp Gold will monitor Windows® event logs and Syslogs to alert immediately when a new event has been logged which may impact network stability.
Use the events monitoring system to troubleshoot network problems by relating device downtime to a specific event.

SNMP Trap Monitoring
WhatsUp Gold provides network managers with any specific network information that is sent via SNMP trap. The SNMP trap handlers will capture snmp traps (i.e. interface was shut down, printer is out of paper), log them to WhatsUp Gold, and send notification.

Network and System Performance Monitoring

  • SNMP Thresholds – Set thresholds for network resources to monitor and identify areas of network strain or capability problems. Select a specific value or range of values that resources (i.e. CPU, disk space, bandwidth) should meet. WhatsUp Gold will generate and alert when these resources fall out of acceptable ranges.
  • SNMP Viewer - Network mangers can track real-time utilization of specific resources using WhatsUp Gold’s graphing utility. With a few clicks, managers can track resources second by second to aid in resource management.

Interface Monitoring
At a glance, network managers can identify which interface is down on a device and cut the time to problem resolution.
Check the status of individual device interfaces to isolate where a problem resides on the device. Active links can be displayed on the network map to connect interfaces with the associated device. If an interface fails the active link will change from green to red.

Notification

By being the first to know when a mission-critical network device or service goes down — you can avoid lost revenue and increase customer and employee satisfaction.

WhatsUp Gold can help keep your mission-critical network up and running 24 hours a day. It  provides a variety of views into your network in real-time and alerts you when devices or services are down. Down notification is available by desktop alarm, beeper, pager, e-mail or telephone so you can be the first to know when a critical server or service goes down.

With WhatsUp Gold's instant notification system, you and your network management team will be the first to know when your network efficiency is being compromised.

Since every network manager needs to be alerted to network failure, a timely response is critical to avoid lengthy downtime. WhatsUp Gold's instant notification features minimize your response time.

In addition to visual alerts, you can also specify the following types of alerts when a device or service goes down or when an SNMP trap is received:

  • Sound an alarm
  • Send notification via a beeper, pager, e-mail, or voice message
  • Make an entry in the log file

While monitoring, you can display up-to-the-minute status information about a particular device by simply pointing to it and double-clicking the left mouse button to display a status window.

SMS Notification allows you to receive critical network alerts from a preferred communications vehicle, increase time savings and maximize user productivity.
It provides broad support for SMS providers to send direct alerts to a pager or cell phone. WhatsUp Gold 8.0 includes a predefined provider database to eliminate the time needed to find and configure provider settings in WhatsUp Gold. The SMS notification is quick and easy.

Group Notifications
Easily create "response teams" to be notified of an alert condition by combining multiple notifications into a single, named group. A "smart" notification process gives you the option of stopping subsequent alerts after the first member of a group has been notified, or just alerting everyone in the group.

Recurring Network Status Notification
Be notified of network status in user-defined time intervals sent to your pager or mobile email device.

Text to speech notification
Optional plug-in “reads” textual alerts over the console’s audio system offering “eyes off” notification of outages to network operations staff.  This eliminates the need to record specific WAV files for voice notification at the console.

Enhanced NT Service Monitoring adds the convenient option to restart a failed NT/2000/XP service in conjunction with sending a notification of this service failure. This allows users to manage NT services based on activity within your network.

Reporting

Keep track of device and application availability and response times to assist you in holding your service providers (SPs) accountable and as leading indicators for capacity planning and resource management. WhatsUp Gold can create several internal and external reports and graphs that show historical performance of your network.

Performance Graphs: You can create performance graphs that plot the accumulated polling statistics for selected subnets, devices, and/or network resources. These graphs can show aggregate data, such as the devices with the best and worst availability, or the devices with the highest and lowest response time, the best and worst days of the week for network performance, and more.

Outage reports show device up and down outages and can be viewed in a summary and detailed format. The detail format shows you the number of polls missed and the length of each downtime outage. The summary format shows you total number of system and service outages and the total downtime over the entire reporting period.

Activity Filtering with Log Manager Tool.
Administrators can easily pinpoint and resolve network problems without having to sort through lengthy streams of activity data using WhatsUp Gold's new Log Manager tool. Locating the log data for any type of network activity is made easy by searching on text such as an activity type, IP address or device name. This saves time, provides more flexibility, and also gives users more control since they can pinpoint information without having to sort through extensive data. Logs can also be filtered by date range and subsequently saved, printed, and copied, along with a new log archive management capabilities.

Statistics reports include key polling statistics summarized in a convenient per-device, per-day format. These statistics help show you average round-trip-time and percentage of polls missed. They are helpful in analyzing network problems and bottlenecks.

Both outage and statistics reports allow for you to specify the coverage period (week-to-date, last week, month-to-date, last month, or custom), and the order in which data is presented on the report. You can also print these reports, create tab-delimited file from them, or graph them using the Performance Graph feature (see above).

SNMP Performance Reports now include reports based on data retrieved. This allows you to identify historical trends and capacity problem areas with your system and network resources.

Import/export capabilities
Device types, map, monitors and notification data are readily exportable in either XML or more simplified INI file formats - making these data available for import into external applications. Fully documented file formats allow external applications to output files that are easily imported to create fully functional objects within WhatsUp Gold.

Recurring reports
Regular performance reporting can now be scheduled to run at specific intervals and sent to any recipient via email or posted to the web interface for on-demand viewing. Eliminates the need to run reports manually and ensures distribution of management information to network stakeholders. Reports can be saved in a variety of formats including, MSWORD, PDF and HTML.

Web Access

Use a web browser to access mapping, monitoring and notification functions from a remote computer.

With its own built-in Web server, WhatsUp Gold provides Web access for viewing virtually all the same information that can be viewed from the console and allows you to perform virtually all network administration tasks remotely via any browser from anywhere on the Web.

  • Acknowledging alerts
  • Adding, deleting, or modifying notifications and reports
  • Loading and modifying network maps
  • Altering the polling frequency
  • Changing the refresh frequency of Web pages
  • Modifying user parameters

Secure
Access from the Web is fully password protected, and it can be further restricted by granting or denying access to only those with a specified IP address or in a specified IP address range.

Great Features for MSPs, ASPs, and Hosting Companies
An administrator can designate remote map viewing rights to individuals on a per-map basis to ensure that they only view maps pertinent to their job function. This is especially attractive to management service providers, ASPs, and hosting companies since they can now offer clients secure viewing access to their respective maps.

Customizable Interface
Organizations can now extensively modify the web-based user interface to meet the specific needs of their organization. Possibilities include translations into local languages, private labeling by network management service providers, integration into corporate intranets, or just making functionality and navigation easier for their organization’s to use.

NT System Service
WhatsUp Gold may be run as a system service on Windows NT 4.0 or later, or Windows 2000. In this mode, the WhatsUp Gold user interface is provided through the Web (see above). This results in lower memory usage while providing an extra level of security by allowing the administrator to log off the NT console. In addition, WhatsUp Gold may be set up to take advantage of NT’s automatic restart of services upon rebooting, thus providing improved availability for monitoring critical resources.
