  Features Overview

 Fault Management & Availability Tools

The Orion Network Performance Monitor is a robust, powerful fault management application. The Overview section of the Orion Network Performance Monitor provides a high level view of the entire network. Every node and interface can be viewed from this single page. Each "LED" indicator on the Overview Page is automatically updated with the availability status of the remote device or interface. The Overview screen also allows you to easily drill down to device details when a problem is recognized.

View the status of thousands of nodes and interfaces from a single web page. Select between up/down, bandwidth utilization, interface traffic, errors and discards, and signal-to-noise ratio (for broadband networks). Every element is "hot" allowing you to immediately see the alert and drill into the router, switch, or server in question.

The overview page is configurable to display devices and interfaces by status, type, load, response time and several other options.

The powerful alerting engine can be configured to e-mail or page you when a problem occurs. The system can send alerts based upon several device states including operational status, CPU load, memory utilization, available disk space, and more.

The Orion Network Performance Monitor also includes a robust event monitor. The event monitor allows you to view network events directly from the web. You can search for events based upon device name, type, date period, and more.

Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for Availability and Response Time can be easily managed with the Orion Network Performance monitor. This information is provided in easy to understand charts and graphs on the Orion website.

CPU, Memory and Disk Space Monitoring

Monitor and set alerts on the CPU load and memory utilization of your Cisco routers, Windows 2000 servers, Win XP servers, and other devices that support the host resource MIB. Monitor the disk space utilization for Windows 2000, Win XP, Sun, Novell, and other devices that support the host resource MIB. Summary screen identifies the Top 10 CPU load and memory utilization issues in your network.

The Orion Network Performance Monitor quickly identifies if a Cisco router has CPU or Memory issues. Orion will also monitor disk space on Windows 2000, XP, Sun and Novell servers. The Orion Network Performance lets you get in front of issues before they happen.

One of the most popular features of the Orion Network Performance Monitor is the "Top Ten" View. This view quickly identifies the top ten or ten worst offenders on your network.

The Top Ten View (screen at left) identifies and displays the devices with the highest utilized CPUs. It also lists the servers with the least amount of available disk space as well as the devices with the least amount of available memory.

Not only do you have access to summary level information but you can also drill into a device and identify the total installed memory, available memory, memory currently being used as well as the current CPU Load.

The Orion Network Performance Monitor can monitor CPU, Memory and Disk Space utilization for any device that supports the Host Resource MIB.

 Network Maps

Import any map — from an existing network diagram, topology map, or even a map of the world or a city. The Map Maker allows you to import a map and make it "hot" by dragging nodes onto it. When the map is saved, it is immediately updated with the current status of the added nodes. Map Maker allows you to group your network into regions, districts, sub-networks, and unique locations. See Map Maker Video Tutorial

The Network Performance Monitor Map Maker has several geographic templates included. An existing network topology map or any image can be used. The Map Maker lets you take this image of a map and place your current network nodes and interfaces on the map. Multiple maps can be linked to allow the ability to drill down.

The example on the left shows a world map with several nodes and regions identified by the different dots. The larger dots represent regions containing multiple nodes while the smaller dots represent individual sites. You can build your site with as many layers of grouped maps as you desire.

When a Region is selected, the corresponding map for that region is displayed (second map). The green, yellow, and red dots indicate sites with all nodes available or sites with alerts. The parameters can be adjusted so that a summary indicator changes to an alert condition.

Map Maker can import network topology maps and diagrams. This allows you to use you existing network topology maps and add them to your Orion Network Performance Monitor.

Please note the maps are also associated to the customers authorization level. If a specific user is not authorized to view a location or subnet, his map will not go into alert condition if a device outside the scope of authorization fails. Customers only view the portion of the network you define.

 Event & Alert Management Tools

With Orion you can set thresholds for alerting on up/down, percent of bandwidth utilized, memory utilized, CPU utilized, disk space utilized, and much more. There are hundreds of possible configurations and parameters for alerting and reporting. Orion will send email to any compatible device, including cell phones.

The Orion Network Performance Monitor includes a comprehensive alerting engine and a scalable, robust event monitor. The alerting engine is capable of sending pager or e-mail alerts based upon hundreds of user configurable thresholds. The event monitor allows you to view events sorted by device name, type, and date period. Both the alerting engine and event monitor completely searchable from the web interface.

Advanced Alerting Engine - The Orion Network Performance Monitor's alerting engine is completely customizable and capable of sending alerts based upon hundreds of user configurable thresholds. It's intuitive user interface allows you to create and configure alerts instantly.

Pre-configured alerts include notifications based upon device status, interface traffic, CPU load, and many more. Receive alerts via e-mail, or have them sent directly to your digital phone. Customizable Views/Menus/Toolbars

User views can be customized with a unique filtered view and a unique toolbar. Select predefined views or create your own new views of your network. Pages can be customized with individual corporate styles. See Customizing Views/Toolbars Video Tutorial

With the Orion Network Performance Monitor you can create custom views and menus that are built to show the information you want on the screens you want them. Each screen can be modified to accommodate your specific network design.

The Orion Network Performance Monitor screens can be customized and altered to display information just the way you want it. You can move maps, change the layout and even modify the toolbar. It's as easy as checking the boxes to select the information you want to see. The screen on the top left is an example of some choices available.

You can customize Orion as much or as little as you desire. You can configure Orion so everyone has the same views (screens) or each user has a unique view. You can even modify the toolbars and add you own custom links and selections.

The Orion Network Performance Monitor was designed to provide the network administrator, ISP or consultant with the maximum ability to uniquely modify and configure the application to meet the customers specific requirements. You can even replace the SolarWinds Branding at the top of the screen with you own company logo!

Custom Accounts by User

Define a general logon for each department or create unique accounts for each individual customer. One account could view all servers, another all routers, while a customer account could have access to view a single interface. Each account can have its own page layout, content, and customized toolbar. Orion is ideal for a consultant, ISP, or service provider with numerous customers. See Creating Custom Accounts Video Tutorial

The Orion Network Performance Monitor is so customizable you can configure the "look and feel" of the screens as well as the content and layout. In fact each user (or customer) can be configured with their own custom screens.

The Unique User Customization means that you can have Orion monitoring 100 routers, hubs and servers but each user can only see information and performance statistics on the devices or interfaces you allow. You can even configure it so a user can only see a single interface in a single router if you desire. He would never know the rest of the network exists.

One of the most popular features of the Orion Network Performance Monitor is the ability to customize the application for each customer. As you can see from the left you can not only change the color palate, but the type of information that is displayed on each screen.

Orion also allow you to configure it to allow the server team to see only the servers, the Texas region to only view their network, or the distribution division to see only their equipment. You control who sees what.

With the customization you can even allow each customer to have their own 'hot" network map for fault management from a complex global configuration to something as simple as a network map drawn on a napkin (bottom).
